A thought-provoking journey, this course aims to show you that the study of travel and tourism is not only a simple discussion of how human beings get from A to B but a sociological, economic and cultural discourse surrounding the implications of globalisation in an increasingly connected world.

Designed as an introduction for those who have never studied travel and tourism, you’ll be guided through the elementary concepts and fundamental underpinnings of how the modern tourism industry functions.

The course begins with an exploration of the history and development of international tourism. You’ll also be provided with an overview of the main components of the modern tourism industry.

We’ll take a close look at some of the different kinds of tourism that have been identified in modern times, from cultural and enclave tourism to ‘special interest’ tourism, and explore dynamic relationships between the worlds of tourism, work and volunteering.

The course discusses the various factors that can affect the global travel and tourism industry, such as recessions, pandemics, natural disasters, terrorism and political instability. We’ll analyse the tourism industry’s role in contributing to the global environmental crisis and examine the complex relationship between tourism and culture. The course also provides an in-depth discussion on religious tourism, focusing on the challenges and threats faced by the tourism industry.

The course concludes by discussing controversial forms; sex, medical and euthanasia tourism, along with a look at the relative impact of types that fall under the category of ‘dark tourism’.
